Look Up Upshur County Jail Records

Upshur County inmate records are searched through West Virginia's regional jail system because the county does not publish a separate sheriff jail roster. A person arrested in Upshur County may be held at the regional jail serving the county, may appear on a same-day intake list, or may move to a state prison locator after sentencing. To look up Upshur County inmates online, start with the jail search for current custody, then use court records, phone confirmation, or a public-records request when the roster does not show the full answer.

Upshur County Jail Roster Source

The official current-custody path is the WV Regional Jail Offender Search. It covers regional jail custody, including Tygart Valley Regional Jail and Correctional Facility. The Upshur County sheriff contact page does not publish a county-run roster, and the sheriff page links to Tygart Valley for jail custody. The result is a state search path for local jail records.

The Daily Incarcerations page is the second official tool. It can show daily admissions by county or by institution. On July 2, 2026, the inspected Daily Incarcerations page showed Tygart Valley admissions with table fields for details, time, name, birth date, gender, and total. That was an intake snapshot, not a full court or bond record.

The WVDCR offender-search landing page groups the available choices for jail, prison, daily incarceration, and escapee or absconder searches.

Use the Upshur County Jail Roster

The jail roster search is name-based. It does not expose a booking-number search, county filter, charge filter, date range, or housing-unit field on the public form reviewed in the research. The last name is required, and a first name can narrow the result when many people share a surname. A reCAPTCHA challenge appears at submission.

  1. Open the WV Regional Jail Offender Search for current regional jail custody.
  2. Enter at least the first three letters of the person's last name.
  3. Add the first name if the last name is common or if too many results appear.
  4. Read the WVDCR disclaimer before relying on a result, because public data can change quickly.
  5. If the arrest happened today, check Daily Incarcerations by Upshur County and by Tygart Valley institution.
  6. If the person is not found, call Tygart Valley or use the state prison locator if sentencing or transfer has occurred.

The public search page reviewed for Upshur County inmate records is the same state jail form used across West Virginia regional jails.

The form's limited fields make exact spelling, name variants, and follow-up phone checks important.

Upshur County Inmate Search Fields

The regional jail roster fields are simple, but the limits are important. If a person was booked under a hyphenated name, nickname, maiden name, or misspelled last name, a partial last-name search may work better than a full-name search. The official page says to enter at least the first three letters of the last name.

Field labelTypeRequiredOptions / notes
Last NameTextYesMinimum three letters; partial or full last name accepted.
First NameTextNoOptional narrowing field with maximum length shown as 100.

For Daily Incarcerations, the county dropdown includes Upshur. Institutional admissions may also be viewed for Tygart Valley Regional Jail.

What Upshur County Inmate Records Show

The inspected Tygart Valley daily admissions table showed identity and admission fields, not a full charge sheet. That distinction keeps readers from assuming the jail table is the court file. WVDCR also warns that sentencing information in its search is not meant to reflect the events of the underlying criminal action and that court records should be used for that purpose.

Upshur County Jail Visitation Records

Tygart Valley visits are non-contact, scheduled in advance, and initiated by the inmate. The visitation rules say the inmate submits TVRJ Form 5-0029 to the Visitation OA between Monday morning and Thursday noon of the week before the requested visit. The request must list every visitor who will arrive. Approved or denied slips are returned through the facility process.

Upshur County Record Request Options

For historical booking records, incident records, or copies not available through the public search screens, use the records custodian that holds the record. Upshur County's official FOIA policy was revised June 3, 2026. The research notes no submission fee, possible copying at $0.50 per page, actual postage or shipping, and no charge for electronic communication. West Virginia FOIA provides response options within a five-business-day framework.

A request should name the person, date of arrest or booking, arresting agency, facility, requested records, delivery format, and requester contact information. For Tygart Valley regional jail records, contact WVDCR or the facility. For sheriff records, route the request through the county or sheriff custodian. For formal charges, search court records rather than asking the jail to interpret the case.

Keep the request narrow. A booking sheet, booking photograph, incident report, bond entry, and jail housing notation may be held by different offices or may be limited by active-investigation, juvenile, sealed-record, or expungement rules. If the request concerns a person who moved from Tygart Valley to prison custody, ask WVDCR which office holds the jail record and which office holds the later prison file. If the request concerns an arrest by Buckhannon Police, West Virginia State Police, or DNR, identify that arresting agency so the county does not have to guess which record is being requested.

Note: A missing roster result does not prove release, because transfers, spelling, data lag, and other agency holds can change where the record appears.

Upshur County Jail, Prison, Federal

The roster, prison locator, BOP locator, ICE locator, and VINE all serve different roles. West Virginia VINE is for custody status and notification. The WVDCR prison locator covers active prison, supervision, and parole status. The BOP locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to present. ICE ODLS covers immigration detainees under the rules described by ICE and USA.gov.

These systems should be checked in a sequence that fits the custody facts. If the person was arrested today in Upshur County, start with Daily Incarcerations and the regional jail roster. If a magistrate or circuit case shows a sentence or transfer, move to the WVDCR prison search. If a federal warrant, U.S. Marshals hold, or federal sentence is involved, use BOP or the federal district contacts rather than the county roster. If immigration custody is the issue, ICE ODLS is the public locator. Each tool answers one slice of the record, and none of them replaces the court file for charges or disposition.

SystemBest forMain limit

Daily IncarcerationsRecent admissionsDaily snapshot only
WVDCR prison searchSentenced prison and supervision statusDischarged people do not appear

ICE ODLSAdult ICE detentionNot a mugshot or court-record search

VINE is also useful because it is a notification tool rather than just a one-time search. Family members and victims can use West Virginia VINE for custody and case notification where the service supports the record. For final release, bond, or court-date questions, confirm with Tygart Valley or the proper clerk because notification systems can lag behind court orders and jail processing.
